That Hidden Thread
Curated by Marta Moriarty
Used as a form of currency by traders through the course of pre-colonial history, the Conus shell was traded throughout the length of Africa by Arab, Portuguese and a multitude of African civilizations. The carved spiral became a symbol of wealth, power, strength and spirituality.
This ancient symbol of culture and identity allows a form of reconnection to self and community. The sculpture is made from spaced vertical steel bars spiraling into a central point allowing the viewer to walk into the sculpture and reflect on the space from the middle of the work.
